Three things to do in Westlake and Occidental Square Parks this month
What do coffee, pie-eating and Irish dancing all have in common? Very little, except for their presence in Westlake and Occidental Square Parks.
Pi Day is Monday, March 14 (3.14), so the Downtown Seattle Association (DSA) is celebrating this irrational number with an equally irrational event. At noon in Occidental Square Park and 5 p.m. in Westlake Park, you can participate in a speed-eating pi(e) competition.
Seven contestants, in each park, with their hands behind their backs will compete to finish a pie the fastest. If you use your hands, you’re disqualified. Judges will reward the winner with a special prize (yet to be determined).
If you are interested in showing off your pie-eating skills, visit either of the parks and fill out a sign-up sheet with a Park Ambassador. Even if you’re not interested in participating, you should attend: why would you want to miss a bunch of strangers shoving pie in their faces?
Festál, presented by Seattle Center, is a year-long series of free events honoring the cultural richness and diversity of the Pacific Northwest.
To tease the full experience at Seattle Center, Westlake Park is hosting Festál Fridays: previews of all the great Festál activities before they make it their way to Seattle Center. The first features a dance by Tara Academy of Irish Dancers.
The Tara Academy is a Seattle-based, competitive Irish Dance school with more than 40 years of history in the Pacific Northwest.
More Festál Fridays are coming to Westlake Park.
Pioneer Square Coffee Break
In addition to a mad dash of irrational pie-eating glory, the DSA is also hosting a relaxed event in Pioneer Square. Pioneer Square Coffee Break will host a selection of coffee shops and roasters native to the neighborhood and invites you to taste the best they have to offer.
The event takes place for free from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 31 in Occidental Square Park. Each participating coffee shop will sample a signature blend in their preferred brewing method. The DSA will provide space for demonstration or retail offerings as well.
People who go to Pioneer Square Coffee Break can leave their business card for a chance to win a carefully selected gift basket full of participating vendors’ coffee.
Stay tuned to the Occidental Square Park Facebook as more details become available.
