About MID

MID Cleaning Crews

The Metropolitan Improvement District (MID) is a non-profit service organization that strives to make Downtown inviting, clean and safe. The MID achieves this by providing cleaning and safety/hospitality services, as well as destination marketing, research, business recruitment, market analysis, and transportation solutions for Downtown Seattle.

MID HISTORY

Founded by the Downtown Seattle Association in 1999, the MID is financed through tax assessments on Downtown properties and covers a 225 square block area in Downtown Seattle’s core.

Each day, the MID’s 62 Downtown Ambassadors patrol the streets of the Denny Triangle, Pioneer Square, Retail Core, Waterfront, West Edge, and, starting in 2014, Belltown  neighborhoods in order to maintain Seattle’s healthy, vibrant urban core.

MID RENEWAL

Every 10 years our ratepayers – commercial and residential property owners – are asked to voice their approval for continuing the services we provide for the hundreds of thousands of people who live, work, shop and play in Downtown each year. If approved, this process leads to a renewal of MID services.

In May the Seattle City Council voted to renew the MID for another 10 years beginning July 1, 2013, this renewal includes boundary expansions to the north and south of the current service area incorporating Belltown and additional blocks in Pioneer Square.

As part of this renewal process, an interim ratepayer advisory board shall be appointed by the City Finance and Administrative Services Director and approved by the current MID Ratepayer Advisory Board at its annual business meeting, and a permanent Board will be voted on at the Board’s August meeting.

In identifying potential Board members, the MID solicits recommendations from MID ratepayers and nominates a slate of candidates which reflect a cross-section of MID neighborhoods, business sectors and expertise, as well as resident and street-level retail representation.
