Help Us Secure the Federal Reserve Bank for a Downtown School

One of the largest hurdles to overcome in developing a Downtown Seattle public school is finding the right location.  Or, more precisely, securing available property.  A recent development just might propel this effort beyond the property hurdle, and your support will help.

K-12 Enrollment A proposal was submitted by the Compass Housing Alliance to place a centralized center for human services and additional homeless shelter at the site of the former Federal Reserve Bank on 2nd Avenue.  However, the Department of Health and Human Services notified the group that their application has been denied due to inadequate financial resources.

The Downtown Seattle Association (DSA) worked with Seattle Public Schools (SPS) and the City of Seattle to put together a proposal to develop a public school on this site, and the U.S. Department of Education is expected to decide on this proposal in September.

SPS is aware of the need for a Downtown school, which is why it included $5M for planning in the most recent levy. The possibility of acquiring the Federal Reserve Bank building warrants immediate action by the district and city. We strongly support your collaborative exploration of this exciting opportunity.

The number of children living Downtown has increased steadily over the past 20 years, is the fastest growing demographic Downtown and as that population continues to grow the need for a Downtown public school is going to be even stronger

Seattle is one of the few major U.S. cities without a public school located in the urban core. Let’s close the gap and provide Downtown families with the very basic option that other Seattle neighborhoods already enjoy – a neighborhood public school.
